About RANJ

Hello, I’m Ranjit Dhaliwal, a London-based ceramic artist.
My practice is influenced by the forms of modern European studio pottery, married with a bright colour palette that is inspired by my Indian heritage.

I’m currently developing a new series of sculptural ceramic vessels titled Motion. These are made only with the hand, using a novel method that genuinely pushes the material to its limits.

Pieces of a specially blended clay body have been stretched and torn, then assembled to create unique forms. This gives the work a rich and raw surface texture on which the moment and the act of making is preserved forever.

This series is inspired by the movement of wind and water in shaping our natural world and also celebrates the spontaneous physicality of human gestures.

I am drawn to the humble nature of a craft that is based on making things from earth, dug from the ground, and the magical transformation that comes from subjecting it to intense heat. I feel a strong connection to our pottery tradition that goes back many millennia but still remains vital to the way we live now.

My work has been featured in The Guardian and The Observer

You can find me on the Crafts Council’s directory of makers, and I am also a professional member of Design-Nation.

I am available for commissions from individuals and galleries, so please get in touch.
